Millwall and Wigan relegated

Matt Derbyshire put the Millers in front on 52 minutes and Lee Frecklington doubled their advantage six minutes later.

Oliver Norwood pulled a goal back for Reading with three minutes left to play to ensure a nervous finish to the game.

But Rotherham held on for a 2-1 victory which means the gap between themselves and the relegation places is now four points with just a single game left to play.

Millwall have been a Championship club since winning the League One play-offs in 2010 while Wigan return to the third tier for the first time since 2003 having been relegated from the Premier League in 2012-13, the same season they won the FA Cup for the first time.

Wigan chairman David Sharpe told the club's website: “It’s a sad day for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic but we will bounce back, I want that to be the main message to our fans tonight.

“Our only target next season is promotion, nothing else will suffice and the job of rebuilding the club is already well under way under Gary Caldwell and his staff. 

“Football is full of examples of clubs who have come back stronger after relegation and I want us to be the latest one of those. We have an amazing opportunity to start afresh and begin an exciting new era for the club."

Mourinho: No motivation needed

The Blues take on United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday live on Sky Sports 1 HD and Mourinho believes the fixture is a special occasion.

Mourinho said he hasn’t needed to find extra motivation for his players in training this week as the game is one which the supporters want to watch and the players are desperate to play in.

He said: “To play Manchester United is to play against one of the biggest clubs in the world and the best teams in the Premier League and I think this is what everybody wants.

“This week I was not worried about motivating players, or players to be focussed on the game and the opponent because there is no need. It’s an easy job.

“It’s a big match. You have to play against everyone home and away. Our fight is to have the same motivation and ambition, no matter what opponent.

“But the reality is that these matches are the easy ones – the ones where every player is desperate to play. They are the matches everybody likes.”

Manchester United have injury worries ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge with Michael Carrick, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo all missing out.

Chelsea largely have a clean bill of health, with Mourinho saying Loic Remy is rated at better than 50-50 to play.

The Blues boss also said that Diego Costa is “progressing well” and will start training with the rest of the squad next week.

He said: “I think he has a chance for the next weekend. But our target was for Diego to play the last four matches and Arsenal is the sixth match to the end so if he doesn’t play Arsenal or Leicester it is not a problem as our focus is on four. But things are going so well that in this moment we think he has a chance for the next weekend.”

Mourinho praised PFA nominee Eden Hazard ahead of the United fixture, and also said that he “loves” his squad of players and what they are working towards.

He said: “We want to win the league, he (Hazard) wants to win the league.

“Obviously, on the top of the collective ambitions, if the player deserves something special and if it comes from his fellow players I think means a bit more.

Charlie Adam has described his stunning strike against Chelsea as 'one of those things', claiming he would rather have won the game than scored the goal.

Stoke were trailing to an Eden Hazard penalty when the Scotland international spotted home keeper Thibaut Courtois playing his traditional 'sweeper role' and tried his luck from fully 65 metres.

A second-half goal from Loic Remy ensured the points remained at Stamford Bridge but Adam, who regularly attempted the feat while at Liverpool - according to Jamie Carragher - and scored one from a similar distance for Blackpool reserves in 2009, admitted the result was all that mattered.

“It’s one of these things that happened in the game that you don’t seen very often and lucky enough it was me who managed to do it,” Adam toldSky Sports News HQ.
